Many people stay as mediocre because they don’t know how to strive for excellence and achieve it. Some don’t even know what to strive for. They try to achieve their tasks with excellence but fall short almost every time. As a result, they settle for less. They allow the excellence in them to become dormant. They never become whom or what they are destined to be. In this article, we’ll be looking at what it takes to strive and achieve excellence.
Choose to excel:
Many people never excel because they never made a choice to be excellent. You cannot strive for excellence if you don’t make the choice to be. In today’s world, there is quality and substandard products. The production of any of the product is a choice by the producer. You can graduate from school with a quality or substandard grade. The choice is yours.
Forget the past:
Dwelling on the past is a major setback when it comes to striving for excellence. You may be relying on past successes or brooding over past failures. You should always strive to be better than your past. Don’t live in your yesterday, live in your today. If you rely on past success, it means you are already going down in your current business or endeavor. Your success in the past should be remembered as your days of little beginning. Also, remembering your past failures can stop you from moving forward. Don’t let your bad story deter you from making your own good story. Your value is in what you are today and not what you were in the past.
Set your Goal:
Your goal defines your destination. It shows plainly what you’ve set your mind to achieve. Achieving excellence in whatever field we choose is our goal in this article. Having a goal gives you direction and destination. Your goal should follow this 5 letter acronym, SMART. They are S – Specific, M – Measurable, A - Achievable, R – Realistic, T – Time bound. Your goal should be a SMART goal.
You cannot become excellent in what you do if you don’t continuously improve yourself. You should be better by the hour than you ever were. There is no room for stagnancy. Regular studying, training and research will do you a lot of good in your pursuit of excellence. Remember, you are not competing with anybody but yourself. Strive to beat your own record.
Prepare for failure:
Oh yes, you heard me right, PREPARE FOR FAILURE! I mean expect it. I am not trying to be a pessimist but to be a realist. There is no success without failure at some point. You can choose to let your failures make you or mar you. It’s your call. You need to prepare your mind and resources to support you when you fail. Your bank could play this role or you may have an extra stream of income to support your business. Many businesses die within a space of five years because they fail to heed this important point. Nobody is perfect. Thomas Edison wouldn’t have succeeded in inventing the electric bulb if he had not prepared himself for failure 999 times.
No matter the obstacles on your way, you should never quit. When you quit you are defeated. “Winners never quit and quitters never win”, this should be your watch word. Abraham Lincoln contested and lost many elections before he was finally elected the President of the United States. He never gave up and so he later became the best President in the American history.
So get up and strive for excellence!
